embracing autumn

One of my favorite things to do is sort through all of my clothing in the fall and spring. I love filling up bags of gently used items that are no longer comfortable or appealing to me and delivering them to the Salvation Army for someone else to enjoy. Since my priority is to keep my things tidy and organized in our tiny closets, it helps me keep my accumulation in check. I’m very conscious of creating visually appealing displays even when it comes to clothing. If things are getting wrinkled and messy, it’s a signal to me that I need to evaluate what I am ready to let go of.

Placing my favorite sweaters on open shelves next to my bed, adding seasonal collages to the mantel and kitchen counters with a candle and framed photograph, and placing branches of leaves in vases is how I decorate to evoke a sense of coziness and to embrace the fall.

I have always displayed items with intention and thought behind them. As a child, I collected stuffed animals, dolls, Avon perfume bottles, Angels, and bird statues and I would frequently rearrange all of it. I was aware of the lightness and excitement I would feel as I looked at the new arrangement. What I have come to learn is that I was elevating my energy; creating a ripple effect of joy in the world.

Look around your home and notice what you have chosen to display. Are these items uplifting or depleting your energy? It matters. Display what you find beautiful and meaningful and place these objects in places where you can pause and appreciate them. It’s a connection to your soul. ​
