Monday, August 5, 2024: We've had the best weekend in East Tawas and are sad to leave. The kids are all packed up. Stacie and Patrick stopped by to say "Goodbye" before driving home. Justin was taking one last swim with the kids. At 12:15 p.m., we were leaving the harbor. We hoped the kids would see us crossing the bay but they didn't. It's cloudy and a little windy today; not the calm, serene, flat water conditions that I love. ;-) At 1:39 p.m., Port Austin Harbor is in our sight! We pulled up to the gas dock and I recognized the young dockhand walking towards us. He didn't recognize us immediately and as he got closer, I could see his memory flooding back. A big smile spread across his face as he started explaining to his coworker the debacle that happened with our previous visit at the beginning of this trip. He went on to tell us that they've had news cameras here in the past for some much more serious missteps than took place with us. I can't say that it made us feel much better about paying for the diver but it was a funny situation.
As we were getting ready to pull away from the gas dock, Larry asked me which boat slip I wanted. I pointed to the one on the end that was directly across from us. My thought was that it would be an easy in and out. I should've asked Larry to explain more after he replied, "Are you sure?" I was set on that one slip for ease so he followed my suggestion and soon we were tied up in the slip I chose. We spent the afternoon walking around town. Sadly, the clouds didn't offer the spectacular sunsets that I've gotten accustomed to seeing here. We settled into bed for the night and felt the boat rocking. I assumed a boat must've come in but the rocking didn't stop ALL NIGHT LONG. Sigh.
