Thursday, August 1, 2024: 9:23 a.m. and there isn't a ripple on the water. It feels like a sin to disturb the serenity so I'm glad we weren't the first boat to start their engines and leave the harbor. At 10:50 a.m., we were leaving Presque Ile for the last time this summer. I was happy to see the calm waters for our entire cruise across the lake. The pastel colors make the water and sky look as if they are one. At 12:53 p.m., we are approaching Harrisville Marina. The fuel dock was busy so we pulled right into our boat slip for the night with the intention of getting fuel and a pump out in the morning. We were impressed at how helpful and efficient the young dockhands were and there were so many of them working! They offer a shuttle service to boaters, however, we wanted to walk around town and see if there were any shops or restaurants close by. It wasn't long before we returned to the marina and requested the shuttle take us to Alcona Brew Haus for dinner. The harbor master drove. I told him how impressed we were with the cleanliness and service they provide. He explained that he is a retired law enforcement agent. Soon after retiring, he was invited to get involved with the marina. It wasn't long before he discovered the previous harbormaster was embezzling funds. Most of the people who were managing the marina during that time have all left and now he is the harbormaster. His system of hiring local, young kids is working out very well. This was confirmed by the girl who picked us up in the shuttle, after dinner. She spoke highly of her experience working at the marina. She's leaving for college very soon and her confidence and plans for her future were so inspiring! Even though we didn't find much to do in Harrisville, we were so happy to have stayed in this marina! Wednesday, July 31, 2024: Oh my goodness, we woke to another stunning sunrise. This time, the sky is soft pastel colors, rather than gray and white like yesterday. It's still incredibly breathtaking and I don't want to move and disturb the peace and tranquility. We're both so inspired to be near large bodies of water. It's freeing to know this river opens to a bay that opens to a lake that can take us anywhere we want to go. Today we're staying in Lake Huron and going back to Presque Ile; a second visit for this trip to one of our favorite places. Tuesday, July 30, 2024: This morning was nothing short of miraculous. When I woke up and looked at the river, in the direction of the bay, I was completely overwhelmed by its beauty. The contrast between the heavy cloud cover and the mirror-like water was breathtaking. The cloud cover lasted for about an hour, creating the most stunning views. I was mesmerized as a fishing boat passed by, heading out into the bay. I walked over to the beach but the view wasn't as great so I quickly walked back to the boat, not wanting to miss another moment. Larry was working and I just sat and stared, finding it difficult to turn my eyes away from the water. I took picture after picture for about an hour before the clouds started to break up. It was amazing to witness. We took our first dinghy ride early so we could go out for breakfast. After tying up on the break wall, we walked through town and spotted Step Inn; a great place with excellent food. Cruising along the river, there was a large industrial building that grabbed our attention. It appeared to be abandoned which prompted us to start dreaming about what we could create if we bought it. The idea of being here with these views on a daily basis is so exciting; however, it completely defeats our desire to travel for extended periods a few times each year. With a quick shake of my head, I'm refocused on what we love most and that is freedom. :-) It's so funny to me that my first reaction to this area when we visited the first time was pure disappointment and now I don't want to leave! It's thrilling to me when we find a marina with nice laundry facilities and this is one of those places. While we waited for each load to wash and dry, we were relaxing on the beach, reading our books. If only it was always this enjoyable to do the laundry. ;-) For our final dinghy ride for this visit to Cheboygan, we went back into town and had fantastic chicken wings at Mulligan's. I definitely want to come back here on future trips. At 11:00 a.m., the Cheboygan River was behind us, we headed into the bay and then Lake Huron, arriving in Presque Ile two hours later. We were here on day four of this trip and we're happy to be back! It's incredibly peaceful here. Every now and then, we can hear someone ring the lighthouse bell that is in close proximity to the marina. It's a soothing sound by day and a bit eerie to me if it's dark out. :-) There is a perfect store across the street from the marina. At first pass, it seemed a bit strange, unlike a typical grocery store; however, they had every single item we were in need of, including potatoes to go with our steak we're having for dinner. With easy access to our dock, we stocked up on drinking water, and some other necessities before heading out in the dinghy. We motored around the perimeter of the entire bay, getting a closer look at the waterfront cottages. It was nice to see some people in the backyards, enjoying their view. I imagine they don't see very many people so maybe we gave them something to talk about. It was a perfect afternoon at the beach, followed by grilled steaks, fresh green beans, and baked potatoes for dinner on the boat. We walked along the break wall and I couldn't stop taking pictures of the stunning sky and water as the sun was setting directly in line with the marina. Summer bliss. Leaving Presque Ile at 10:50 a.m. this is the building we were fantasizing about This is funny to me...3 different dinghies pulling up to the gas dock at the same time. Moments after the dinghies left, this yacht pulled up.
