We visited friends this weekend who recently moved into their new house. After the first day taking in all the details, I couldn't sit back any longer before I started rearranging their accessories (it's a good thing they appreciate my compulsive decorating behavior). I chose to start in the bedroom because it is the most important room of the house. We take in the energy (good and bad) from all the things surrounding us (even while we sleep) so it is important to choose carefully. Since they already own many beautiful things that were placed throughout the house, I was able to pull in items from different rooms to create the look, feel, and meaning I know they wanted. This isn't just a pretty "face" you're looking at. This collection of items has a love story! As the owners walk down the hallway towards their bedroom, they see the left corner of the dresser with the clock, lamp, mirror, and flowers...the entryway frames it beautifully and it creates the feeling of pulling them in further to see what else is there. The overall story I created for the owners is: time stands still when we are together; we want to expand and reflect on the beauty of our relationship. I like to say that I create hidden messages in the stories because anyone else who sees this display is not going to know the true meaning. Here are the hidden messages: the clock doesn't work so it symbolizes "time stands still," the mirror symbolizes reflection, the lamp symbolizes expansion, the flowers represent beauty, the pair of candles symbolize a relationship of two people, the photos are of intimate moments of their life. The physical act of turning on the lamp each night reaffirms that they are reflecting on and nurturing their love for one another. This display represents their desire for knowledge and helpful people (the authors books). The photos are of their beloved dogs who brought them many years of happiness. The bookends symbolize they are a "pair." The goggles are a reminder to maintain good health by pursuing their desire to swim. The two candles represent they are a couple (two) and they symbolize reflection/celebration/remembrance.
